Tooth Whitening

One's natural tooth colour can be affected by many different factors.  As you age your teeth naturally darken.  Some of the things that make your teeth dark are surface stains that may be the result of tobacco products and consumption of certain foods or drinks. Further, whether your teeth appear "white" or not can be affected by skin tone, make-up and even the colour of the clothing you wear.

Many Canadians desire their whitest, brightest smile.  As a result a range of whitening options are available. These products are either surface whiteners or bleaches.

Surface whiteners products use abrasives to remove surface stains. These products are most often toothpastes or chewing gums. The effectiveness of these products is limited to surface stains and should not be used as a substitute for professional cleaning.

Bleaches can also be used to whiten your teeth.  Bleaching products are either peroxide- or carbamide-based and are capable of changing the colour of your tooth. If you are considering bleaching your teeth you should consult with Dr. Hall to determine the cause of your discolouration and whether or not this type of whitening will work for you.  Tooth sensitivity and soft tissue irritation can occur during bleaching treatment.  Please be aware that bleaching will not change the colour of existing fillings or crowns.  As well, if you are taking certain types of medications you may not be a candidate for these bleaching products.

At Parry Sound Family Dentistry we can provide both ZOOM 2 whitening and custom-made trays that you can fill with a special bleach each day.  The ZOOM 2 will give you results in ONE HOUR, whereas the take home custom trays may take up to two weeks to whiten your teeth.  All ZOOM 2 clients automatically receive their own custom made take home trays to touch up your bright smile whenever you want.
